fact sheet: laser tooth whitening

Laser tooth whitening makes it possible to whiten most yellowed or stained teeth during a single 1-2
hour procedure even teeth stained by tobacco, coffee and tetracycline can be dramatically improved. The
convenience of laser tooth whitening is the perfect choice for the busy individual, the results of laser
whitening may vary and depend upon your initial tooth colour and oral hygiene.

What causes teeth discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include ageing and consumption of staining substances such as
coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. During tooth formation consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or
excessive fluoride may also cause discoloration.

Who may benefit from laser whitening?

Almost anyone. However treatment may not be as effective on some as it is for others. The dentist can
determine if you are a viable candidate thorough oral examination, including a shade assessment.

Is laser whitening safe?

Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that laser whitening under supervision of a dentist is
safe. As with many tooth whitening products, laser whitening is not recommended for children under 15 or
pregnant women.

How does the laser whitening work?

The procedure is simple. It begins with a short preparation to isolate your lips and gums. The dentist will
then apply the whitening gel on the teeth and activates it by laser. This gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen
peroxide. As the hydrogen peroxide gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentine, bleaching
coloured substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. Laser aids in activating the Hydrogen
peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to
patient depending on the structure of the teeth.

Are there any side effects?

Some people experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity. These symptoms disappear within 1-3 days
after completion of the treatment. Applying a Fluoride gel or a dental desensitiser resolves the sensation.

How long do the results last?

18-24 months usually. By using home kits for a short period of time after laser whitening, your teeth will
always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best for longer we recommend
using whitening toothpaste and occasional touch-ups with the home kits.

How much will it cost?

Prices can vary depending on how many teeth have been treated. An estimate will be given to you by the
dentist after a short examination and shade assessment. To book your free consultation contact Stardent
