Veneers are a remarkable treatment that can bring about a complete transformation to your smile. As a cosmetic treatment they can create a beautiful aesthetic and give you the confidence to show off your smile.
What are veneers?
Veneers are very thin sheets of laminate, which are placed over the natural teeth to create a flawless smile. Veneers are attached to the teeth in the same way as false fingernails are applied to the nails. There are different types of veneers and they are made from different materials. Cheaper veneers are made from composite materials, whilst more expensive veneers are made from porcelain and other ceramic materials. Porcelain veneers tend to last longer and they create a more attractive aesthetic, as they look more natural and have a glossy finish.
What does the procedure involve?
Before the veneers can be attached, it is necessary to prepare the teeth to make room for the new veneers. This involves the removal of tiny layers from the surface of the natural teeth. The preparation process is carried out using a special tool known as a burr – the teeth and gums will be numbed using a local anaesthetic during the procedure, so you will not experience any pain or discomfort.
Once the teeth have been prepared, using the latest CEREC Omnicam ,our cosmetic specialist will scan your teeth, which will be used to design and manufacture your new veneers in just ONE VISIT. Usually the impressions and images are sent away to a laboratory. However at Stardent we are delighted to offer our clients a same day CEREC service, which means that your veneers can be designed, manufactured and fitted all on the same day. The images taken by your dentist will be converted into 3D computerised models of the teeth, which are then used to design the new veneers. You will be involved in the design process to make sure that you get the look you want.
Once we are happy with the design, it will be sent to the on-site milling machine, which will fabricate the veneers. The process will only take about 30 minutes. Once the veneers are ready we can fit them and your new smile will be ready.
Are veneers safe?
Veneers are very safe and the procedure should be painless. If you are worried about the procedure or you feel nervous, talk to your dentist.
Who can benefit from veneers?
Veneers can be used to treat a whole range of oral health and orthodontic problems, including:
- crooked teeth
- gaps between the teeth
- heavily stained and chipped teeth
- damaged teeth
- crowded teeth
If you have complex orthodontic problems, you may be advised to have orthodontic treatment before veneers, as this will help to preserve the natural tooth structure.
What is CEREC technology?
CEREC technology is an incredible invention, which enables dentists to design, construct and fit new restorations on the same day. Images taken by the dentist are converted into 3D computerised models by a computer and these models are then used as a template for the new restoration. Once the dentist is happy with the design, it will be sent to the on-site milling machine and the new restoration will be manufactured. Once the restoration is ready, it can then be fitted. This is the case with same day veneers, for example. CEREC allows patients to enjoy the benefits of their treatment almost straight away. It eliminates the need for repeat visits and temporary restorations and also improves the design process.
How long do veneers last?
Veneers do not last forever and they will need to be replaced. Porcelain veneers last a lot longer than composite veneers, and if you look after them carefully they should last around 10 years.
